Changes to Patient Consent for Releasing Behavioral Health Information
The partnership between the University of North Carolina School of Government (UNC SOG) and the SUDA Institute ensures that the SUN Project operates within the legal framework necessary for sharing patient information related to Substance Use Disorder, as outlined in 42 C.F.R.2. This legal framework sets the SUN Project apart from other perinatal substance use programs nationwide. Specially trained community partners, who offer support to pregnant women dealing with Substance Use Disorder, collaborate in monthly care coordination meetings to address the social determinants of health affecting SUN Moms and their families. Through our collaboration with UNC SOG, adjustments have been made to align state legal requirements for patient information disclosure with federal law, thereby simplifying the process for community partners.
